Website design for

an online exhibition (and archive) on

a Black Canadian art collection.

Client:

ARTEXTE
Blackity Exhibition

Project:

Artexte, a library, research centre, and exhibition space, houses over 30,000 contemporary art documents from 1965 onwards.

Mutual Design created the online portal for Dr. Joana Joachim’s Blackity exhibition, showcasing multimedia on Black Canadian art from the 1970s to 2010s, including photographs, sculptures, videos, and audio.

User feedback highlighted the importance of tactile interaction with exhibition materials. The portal needed to function as an archive and exhibition space, providing features for researchers, archivists, curators, and librarians, such as one-click citations.

Inspired by Dr. Joachim’s sketches, the design features transformative filters reflecting the fragmentary history of Black Canadian art. Thicker bands indicate more documents, thinner bands fewer.
